Skills-based volunteerism is a type of volunteering that aligns an individual’s service activities with the tasks or issues they are most qualified to address, thereby exponentially increasing the value of volunteers’ time and potential impact.

Pro bono service is a specific type of skills-based volunteering where volunteers contribute their professional skills, often to support a nonprofit’s internal operations. Simply put, pro bono projects are “professional services made accessible to organizations serving the public good, generally without expectation of a fee.”
For the purposes of this website, we will use the terms skills-based volunteerism and pro bono interchangeably.
